A beautiful but grim film about a man slowly choking to death on the ash from the surrounding burning sugar cane fields, and his family struggling to make the decision about whether to hold on to the sliver they’ve carved out for themselves or gamble it on the unknown.

The Club is about a group of fuck-up priests and their housekeeper living in this piece of shit town in the middle of nowhere, like a serious version of Father Ted. Their contented peace is shattered when a priest’s victim shows up, not with the weeping and wailing of idealised victimhood, but with the anger and vulgarity of a wretch whose ruination is written over every inch of him, and exposes how much has been built on denial, not repentance.

Hail, Caesar! was an actually lovely movie, even more beautiful than it was funny (and it was well funny). Surprisingly, Channing Tatum stood out as one of the best performances of the film.

Free bubbly and half-naked centurians at the Opening Gala party. CANNOT BELIEVE MY LUCK

The Witch was excellent. Paced more like a story of family breakdown than a stereotypical horror, it evokes a great sense of time and place. Would recommend if you want to remember what it was like when you were little and scared of witches.
Also an excellent film to make me thankful I didn’t have much of religious upbringing. You really do wonder what it’s for.
All in all, I’m seeing 48 films this year.
Guess who got a ticket to FRIGHTFEST!!!
